The date earmarked for a road closure to be lifted for a weekend has changed.
New Road, Uttoxeter, is currently closed to traffic in both directions from the Shell garage entrance for approximately 400 yards west towards Tunnicliffe Way.
It will be completely reopened to all vehicles for one weekend while overnight road closures take place on the nearby A50.
Originally that was scheduled to happen in mid-November, but now New Road will completely reopen to all vehicles from 6pm on Friday, November 23rd until 9.30am on Monday, November 26th.
After 9.30am on the 26th the New Road roadworks will be reinstated in the same place outside the Shell garage and continue with the same diversions as before.
Mark Winnington, Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet member for Jobs and Growth, said:
The temporary reopening of New Road coincides with the need for some work on the A50 to tie in slip roads after the recent bridge demolition.
Although the A50 closures are being restricted to overnight and the official diversion route takes vehicles a different way, we can’t have both the A50 and New Road closed at the same time.”
The overnight closures of the A50 will be between the A521 roundabout at Blythe Bridge and the B5030 roundabout at Uttoxeter.
The diversion route will be the same for vehicles travelling in both directions. From the east, traffic will be diverted northwards from the A50 at Uttoxeter on to the B5030 for a few hundred yards to the roundabout with the A518. Traffic will turn right there, cross back over the A50 along The Dove Way and continue on the A518 clockwise around Uttoxeter and follow the road towards Stafford. Vehicles will then follow the A51 and A34 towards Stoke-on-Trent, before joining the A500 and then the A50 to Blythe Bridge. The route is reversed from the west.
The New Road roadworks outside the Shell garage will also be completely lifted the following weekend to coincide with a complete road closure further along the A522 north of the A50, between the new roundabout and JCB World Parts Centre. The roadworks outside the Shell garage will be lifted from 6pm Friday, November 30th until 9.30am on Monday, December 3rd.
The roadworks near JCB will be in place from 8pm on Friday, November 30th to 5.30am on Monday, December 3rd.
Pedestrian and bicycle access between Uttoxeter and JCB will be maintained throughout the weekend, but all other traffic will be diverted while the new permanent section of the A522 is tied in with the existing carriageway. Travelling from Uttoxeter, traffic will join the A50 at the new junction, continue to Blythe Bridge and take the A521 to Tean and then the A522 towards Lower Tean and Checkley. Travelling to Uttoxeter the route is reversed.
On Monday, December 3rd the New Road roadworks will be reinstated in the same place outside the Shell garage for the final phase, not before 9.30am, with the same diversions as before and the work there is scheduled to be completed by December 7th.
