Volunteers wanted for IRONMAN 70.3 Staffordshire

Staffordshire’s biggest triathlon is calling out for volunteers to help make the 2017 race a great success.

IRONMAN 70.3 Staffordshire is looking for volunteers and volunteer groups to help out at athlete registration, marshalling the course, assisting in transition and handing out medals and t-shirts at the finish line.

Groups of volunteers are also needed to help out at feed stations, transition, athlete bag drop off and collection and along the cycle and run course.

Volunteers will be joining a team of over 500, including stewards, medical staff and technical officials, and have the chance to gain great experience of working behind the scenes of a world-renowned event.

Sue Ball volunteered at IRONMAN 70.3 Staffordshire in 2015. Sue said:

“Volunteering at Ironman was a wonderful experience.  It was great to be part of one of the UK’s most exciting sporting events.  What I remember most about the day, apart from those amazing athletes was just how many athletes, including Gordon and Tana Ramsay thanked me for giving up my time and volunteering to help at the event – a truly rewarding experience.”

IROMAN 70.3 Staffordshire takes place on Sunday 18th June, with the IRONKIDS competition taking place on Saturday 17 June. The IRONMAN triathlon consists of a 1.2 mile swim in Chasewater, a 56 mile bike course through Lichfield, Burton-Upon-Trent and Cannock Chase, and will conclude with a 13.1 mile run finishing at the Shugborough Estate. Last year, the competition raised over £500,000 for charity.

Helen Riley, Deputy Chief Executive and Director for Families and Communities said:

“Volunteers really are part of the fabric of IRONMAN; the event simply couldn’t run without the hundreds of people giving up their time freely to help out, whether it’s handing out water to athletes, helping them out over the finish line, or making sure the race goes smoothly. Our Staffordshire volunteers continually say what a rewarding experience it is to help out at such a large event; so I’d encourage anyone who wants to get involved but doesn’t want to race, to volunteer and be part of something great.”
