Staffordshire backs Adam Peaty in BBC Sports Personality of the Year

People from across Staffordshire are being urged to vote for record-breaking Uttoxeter swimmer Adam Peaty in this year’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

Boasting the 10 fastest times in history in the 100m breaststroke, the Staffordshire swimmer beat his own 50m world record once in the world heats and again in the semi-final – clocking 25.95 seconds to become the first person to break 26 seconds.

Adam, who started his swimming career at the Dove Valley Swimming Club in Uttoxeter has had a phenomenal few years.

Philip Atkins, Leader of Staffordshire County Council now wants people to get behind Adam and vote for him in this year’s competition.

Philip said:

“Adam is a remarkable sportsperson and has had a truly phenomenal couple of years, smashing records every time he gets in the pool.  He’s a wonderful role model for our young people here in Staffordshire and we are all very proud of him. Being shortlisted for the award for the fourth year running is wonderful news for him and is testament to his natural talent, hard work and determination to be the best.  All we need to do now is vote for him to see him crowned BBC Sports Personality of the Year.”

Adam has been shortlisted alongside Elise Christie – short track speed skating; Sir Mo Farah – athletics, Chris Froome – cycling, Lewis Hamilton – F1, Anthony Joshua – boxing, Harry Kane – football, Johanna Konta – tennis, Jonnie Peacock – Para-athletics,  Jonathan Rea – motorcycling, Anya Shrubsole – Cricket, Bianca Walkden – taekwondo.
