A former MP, Chairman of a football club and college principal are amongst Ten new Deputy Lieutenants appointed this week by Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Staffordshire, Mr Ian James Dudson CBE KStJ
Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant is the Queen’s representative in the County and made the presentations at the first of two special events at Staffordshire County Council’s County Buildings in Stafford on Tuesday 9th May. A second ceremony for those unable to attend is planned for later this year.
The new Deputy Lieutenants will help the Lord-Lieutenant with his duties throughout the year. They include:
- Mrs Julie Arkle of Newcastle-under-Lyme
- Brigadier Simon Bell QVRM of Stone.
- Mrs Joan Walley – Ostrowski of Stoke on Trent
- His Honour Judge Paul Glenn of Stoke on Trent
- Mr Ben Robinson BEM of Burton on Trent
- Mr Charles Hawley of Colton, Rugeley
- The Earl of Harrowby of Sandon Hall
- Wing Commander Elliott Sharrard-Williams of Stone
- Dame Asha Khemka DBE of Burton on Trent
- Admiral Sir Trevor Soar KCB OBE of Boylestone
The Lord-Lieutenant said
“It is a great pleasure to welcome Staffordshire’s new Deputy Lieutenants. They have all been selected because of their roles within their communities and I am sure they will do an excellent job”
Brigadier Simon Bell QVRM TD VR MA said,
“Having served my country for 33 years as an officer in the British Army, I am honoured to be given the opportunity to serve the County of Staffordshire and look forward to supporting Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant.”
Ben Robinson BEM said:
“I am honoured and delighted to be appointed a Deputy Lieutenant and join a group of highly respected and dedicated people who help the Lord-Lieutenant’s office perform its duties.
“It’s a great privilege to take up this position and to help represent Her Majesty the Queen and to serve the people of Staffordshire.”
Dame Asha Khemka DBE said,
“As a long-standing resident, I am proud and humbled to be asked to represent the Staffordshire Lieutenancy and serve the place where I have lived for almost 20 years. It is a huge honour to be appointed as a Deputy Lieutenant of the county that I love so much.
“Staffordshire is blessed to have many hard-working individuals and dedicated groups and charities that make up the very fabric of our communities, and a plethora of fantastic businesses that contribute enormously to our economic prosperity.
“I am relishing the opportunity to meet many of these in an official capacity and make my own personal contribution to this unique and wonderful county.
“For me, there will be no greater honour and privilege.”
Admiral Sir Trevor Soar KCB OBE said,
“I have served my country as a Naval Officer and I am now honoured to be able to do the same for Staffordshire as a new Deputy Lieutenant”
Mrs Joan Walley – Ostrowski said,
“I’m very proud that my public service over 28 years has been recognised and I am honoured to be asked to support the work of the Lord-Lieutenant across Staffordshire.”
Elliott Sharrard-Williams said,
“I am both humbled and honoured to have been appointed a HM Deputy-Lieutenant of Staffordshire today. This appointment is particularly significant to me given that it further reinforces my connection to a county that I have had the good fortune to live and work in all my live.
I am looking forward with immense pride to be able to support HM Lord-Lieutenant and my fellow Deputy Lieutenants to recognise and encourage the very best of Staffordshire, particularly those in our Armed Forces and those selfless members of the community who give their time voluntarily to the betterment of our county.”
Also present at the commissioning ceremony was the Vice Lord-Lieutenant, Colonel Graham Stow CBE DL, the High Sheriff, Mr Humphrey Scott-Moncrieff and the Chairman of Staffordshire County Council, Mrs Janet Eagland.
