New deal for Business Centre tenants

Tenants facing eviction from a business centre can stay after Staffordshire County Council reached an agreement with the building’s owners.

The authority had leased the Uttoxeter Business Centre from its owner since 2008 to provide much-needed office space for small businesses in the area.

But the terms of the contract meant that when the county council gave up the lease in June, it had to return the building to the owner empty – unless the owner agreed the businesses could stay.

Staffordshire County Council had been in negotiation with the owners since before Christmas, but, in March, issued tenants with three months’ notice as agreement had not been reached.

Mark Winnington, Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet member for Economic Growth, said:

I’m delighted the Business Centre tenants will be able to stay if they want now that our negotiations have been successful.

The county council sub-let the units to help small businesses thrive and prosper and I am very pleased that the landlord has agreed to vary the lease and resolve the situation.”
