Less than a week to apply for a secondary school place

Parents and carers applying for secondary school places in Staffordshire have less than a week to do so.

Applications close on October 31, after which Staffordshire County Council’s admissions team will begin the mammoth task of allocating school places.

Last year, nine out of 10 parents were allocated their first choice secondary school, with 98 per cent allocated one of their top three preferred schools.

Parents are also being encouraged to choose three preferred schools when filling in their applications, to ensure they have the best chance of being allocated one of their top three schools.

Choosing a secondary school is a big decision, but there is a wealth of information online at www.staffordshire.gov.uk/admissions.

The new online tool gives parents the ability to search, compare and see the characteristics and performance of local schools.

It includes information on Ofsted rating, GCSE and A Level results, what pupils went on to do after their studies, and whether a school is over subscribed.

Parents are being encouraged to choose three preferred schools when filling in their applications, and to visit any potential secondary schools before making a choice.

Last year a record number of parents in Staffordshire chose to apply online, benefitting from a quick and easy application process. Those applying online will receive an email on national offer day instead of anxiously waiting for the post to arrive.

County Councillor Ben Adams, Cabinet Member for Learning and Skills said:

“Getting their preferred school is really important to parents, and the county council has an excellent track record in meeting people’s requirements as much as possible. We’re leading the way nationally with our admissions process, making it as easy as possible to apply while also ensuring the majority of parents receive their first choice secondary school.

“It’s essential that parents get their applications in on time to give them the best chance of being allocated one of their top three preferred schools.”

Anyone who wishes to apply for a secondary school place for their child in September 2017 can log on to www.staffordshire.gov.uk/admissions
