Gritters primed and ready as temperatures set to plummet

Gritters in Staffordshire are ready to roll as the mini Beast from the East threatens to bring more snow and ice over the weekend.

Temperatures are set to see Staffordshire shiver once again as they fall away below zero – with the Met Office predicting the risk of sleet and snow showers on Saturday.

The county’s 40-strong team of gritters will be carrying out pre-emptive strikes where needed, but motorists are being warned to slow down and take extra care, particularly if they are out and about in the early mornings.

County Councillor Helen Fisher, Cabinet Support Member for Highways and Transport said:

It might be the middle of March, but it looks like another very cold snap is heading our way with some snow showers tomorrow.

While our gritting crews do a fantastic job in often  quite treacherous conditions, it is important that we all take extra care and allow extra time for journeys if the bad weather does return once again.

It’s also important to keep warm and check on older family, friends and neighbours to make sure they are safe and well, particularly if they have any health conditions.”
