Gritters prepare for threat of snow on higher ground

Gritters will be out again tonight, as forecasters predict some snow at higher levels and ground temperatures around freezing.

Staffordshire’s fleet of more than 43 gritters was in action last night and this morning as the cold snap returned to parts of the county.

Helen Fisher, Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet member for Highways and Transport, said:

We’re expecting some snow at higher levels overnight tonight, though it’s all predicted to become rain by the morning.

Nonetheless forecasters say ground temperatures will remain around freezing in areas where snow has fallen, so we will be gritting in the north of the county this evening and then crews will be ready to go out again in the early hours of Saturday.

At the same time gritting crews will be on standby at depots in the rest of the county and will go out if needed, but as always the message is that people should drive carefully according to the conditions.”
