By George – Dozens of Staffordshire Parents continue to opt for Princely Name

The name George is continuing to court favour with Staffordshire parents since the birth of Prince George – with dozens opting for the popular boy’s name.

And, as the country prepares to celebrate St George’s Day this Sunday (23 April), new figures show that the name is still proving a big hit at Staffordshire’s Register Offices.

Since last St George’s Day, almost 100 babies (97) have now been registered with “George” included in their names – with 42 parents choosing it as their child’s first name.

With Prince George soon to celebrate his 4th birthday later in the summer too, the traditional name is expected to remain firmly in the top ten of county names for some time to come.

John Tradewell, Director of Strategy at Staffordshire County Council said:

“George is continuing to be a popular name amongst parents in the county but it’s no real surprise. Not only is it the name of England’s Patron Saint but the young Prince George is also having a huge influence on parents choices.

“It’s been in the top ten for the last few years and I’m sure as we continue to follow the young Prince’s life, we’ll see even more people opting for the name.”

George is now the fourth most popular boy’s name. The most popular boys name in Staffordshire is Oliver followed by Harry and Jack.

For babies born within Staffordshire, the County Council has five full time registration offices and eight part time locations where births can be registered.  Parents have 42 days to register the birth. Registration staff will need the name of the child with the date and place of birth together with the parents’ names, occupations and places of their births.

A popular option for families available at Staffordshire’s registrar offices is to have a baby naming ceremony. The baby is welcomed into the family with a choice of poems, readings and promises that can be included in the celebration.
