Acclaimed children’s poet and author to visit Audley library

Families will get the chance to meet children’s poet and author Joseph Coelho when he visits Audley library as part of his ‘library joining marathon’.

Joseph has set himself the challenge of joining a library in every local Authority in the UK in a quest to celebrate the inclusive, vital role libraries play in people’s lives.

With his trusted campervan, Joseph will visit 209 libraries across the UK over the summer and will be at Audley library on Tuesday 27 August at 10am to join and receive his library card.

Joseph has long been a passionate supporter of libraries in the UK. His debut picture book, Luna Loves Library Day, celebrates his love for libraries and his own childhood spent in libraries:

Gill Heath, Libraries Chief at Staffordshire County Council said:

“We’re very excited and very lucky to welcome Joseph to Audley library as part of his Library Marathon. He’s a great advocate for libraries and the role they play in local communities while promoting a love of books and reading.

“Libraries are an important part of any local community and I’m sure that Joseph’s visit will encourage many more people to join their local library and see for themselves the wide-ranging services they have available.”

Joseph said:

“It was in my local library where I studied for exams with friends, browsed books about beach combing and imagined living by the sea, bought second-hand encyclopaedias that I’d otherwise never own and where I had my first Saturday job. It was in my library that I got to know and connect with my local community, where I read, studied and wrote.”

The Library Marathon will be undertaken with the support of CILIP and Libraries Connected with special activities being planned for Libraries Week, which runs from 7th – 12th October with the theme Celebrating Libraries in a Digital World.

Nick Poole, Chief Executive, CILIP says:

“What a marvellous way to celebrate and promote libraries. We are delighted to support Joseph in his library quest that showcases the important role of libraries in so many people’s stories. As an avid library supporter and advocate Joseph demonstrates the joy the library can bring, and we will be watching and supporting his journey with enthusiasm. We look forward to celebrating with Joseph and libraries across the country during Libraries Week this October.”

Libraries Connected have also been instrumental in connecting Joseph with individual Library Authorities and facilitating his mammoth marathon across the UK.

Mark Freeman, Libraries Connected President said:

“Joseph is a wonderful supporter of libraries and we couldn’t be more excited to support his libraries marathon.”

“We’ve had a wonderful response from libraries across the country offering to host Joseph on his quest and we are delighted that he will again be able to highlight all the wonderful activities that happen in libraries.”

Joseph is plotting his progress on a giant library marathon map on his website at https://www.thepoetryofjosephcoelho.com tweeting and blogging his journey around the UK.
