With just over a month to go and excitement building for this year’s IRONMAN 70.3 Staffordshire, people are being reminded to plan their journeys ahead of the event.
The world-famous competition, now in its third year, takes place on Sunday 18 June and will see competitors complete a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike and 13.1 mile half marathon.
Last year saw more than 2,000 athletes take part from all over the world and thousands turned out to watch at spectating hotspots set up at pubs and picnic spots along the way.
Starting at Chasewater, and passing through Cannock Chase before culminating at the historic Shugborough Estate the event will involve some diversions and road closures for the safety of athletes and members of the public.
To help motorists plan their route and avoid any delays, event organisers IRONMAN UK have released details and a map showing locations and times of all diversions and road closures. Details are available at http://www.enjoystaffordshire.com/ironman. Essential access for carers can also be facilitated by contacting firstname.lastname@example.org
Mark Winnington, Cabinet Member for Economy at Staffordshire County Council said:
“Our last two Staffordshire Ironman 70.3 competitions were a huge success story from start to finish and gave us a great opportunity to really showcase what a fantastic county Staffordshire is to live, work and visit.
“We know from last year’s event that it will be well supported, with thousands of spectators, but there will also be some minor disruption to travel in some areas during the competition. We’re asking people to familiarise themselves with the arrangements ahead of the event and plan their journeys to avoid any inconvenience.”
Volunteers are also needed to help out with marshalling the course, feed stations, athlete registration, athlete bag drop off and collection and along the cycle and run course. They will be joining a team of over 500, including stewards, medical staff and technical officials, getting the chance to gain great experience of working behind the scenes of a world-renowned event.
